Mazda says new engine will get much higher mileage

While some automakers are moving heavily into electric engine technology, Mazda continues to tinker with the internal combustion engine. It says it’s figured out how to make it a lot more efficient. The secret, according to Mazda, is compression ignition.

The next generation engine, called SKYACTIV-X, will appear in Mazda vehicles in 2019. The new technology uses a turbocharger with a compressed mixed of air and fuel and is similar to the process found in diesel technology.

US Turbo Engine use at Record High

The use of turbocharged engines in U.S.-market light vehicles continued on an upward path in the ’17 model year, an exclusive WardsAuto survey shows.

They were installed in a record 27.6% of cars and light trucks built in the ’17 model run through March 2017, up from the prior benchmark of 24.1% in the entire ’16 model year.
